Subject and Association DescriptionNote from the artist:
The history of the sheela-na-gig is rather vague but generally it is thought to be an ancient fertility symbol. However, this one from the Rock of Cashel, which differs from the others found throughout the country, is believed by some to be a fifteenth century representation of a nymph and strictly speaking not a sheela-na-gig. It is also known as "the evil eye stone" - its purpose being to ward off evil spirits.
