Subject and Association DescriptionTowards the end of the First World War, the National War Savings Committee encouraged children to take part in a saving stamps scheme to raise funds for the war effort. Cards were issued and children purchased 6d stamps from the post office to fill these cards up to the value of 15/6. Once full, the card could be exchanged for a savings certificate that would earn interest, paying back £1 after five years.
To offer further encouragement, a collectable pictorial stamp was issued with each 6d purchase. Three series of 60 stamps were issued in 1918, titled Naval, Medals and V.C. Series No. 1. Another three series of 60 stamps were issued in 1919, titled War in the Air, V.C. Series No. 2 and Women’s War Work.
