Subject and Association DescriptionThe School Mistresses and Governesses' Benevolent Institution (abbreviated SGBI) was a British charity providing support to people who taught in a non-government school or worked as a private tutor. The organization was founded in 1841 as the Governesses' Benevolent Institution with the aim of helping governesses in need and to offer them a home in the event of illness or old age. It was founded at a time when so many poor, middle-class women in Great Britain were forced to resort to this profession that it was referred to as “governess misery”. The British writer Charles Dickens and Britain's Queen Mary were among the prominent supporters of the charity. Until recently, the organization maintained, among other things, a retirement and nursing home. In 2017, the organization handed the work over to the Teaching Staff Trust:
