Subject and Association DescriptionMary Hislop MacDonald (nee Gossman) was born in Glasgow on 11th September 1911 to Richard Gossman (a journeyman joiner) and Mary Jane Gossman (nee Somerville). An artist and writer living in Glasgow, Mary signed her work 'Mary Hislop Somerville Gossman' or 'Mary Somerville Gossman' until her marriage to Andrew MacDonald in 1968, thereafter signing as 'Mary MacDonald (Mrs)'. According to an article published in the Kirkintilloch Herald on 5th September 1945, Mary Gossman arranged art exhibitions in aid of war charities during the Second World War, raising over £62 for the Red Cross, Central War Fund and St Dunstan's (later known as Blind Veterans UK).
