Subject and Association Descriptionhttps://www.collectivearchitecture.com/projects/the-empire-cafe:
The Empire Cafe was founded by co-directors Jude Barber of Collective Architecture and author Louise Welsh. ‘Merchant City Voices’, their collaborative series of sounds works exploring Glasgow’s relationship with the North Atlantic slave trade won a 2013 Scottish Design Award. The Empire Cafe was part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme, a partnership between the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee, Glasgow Life, and Creative Scotland through National Lottery funding. It was also supported by The British Council.

"We designed an identity based upon a bracket symbol, reflecting the marginalisation of the subject matter, while also evoking the lines of merchant clippers. We rolled-out the brand across invitations, prints, signage and a specially commissioned poetry anthology — maintaining an online presence with a bespoke event listing website."
