Name/TitlePhoto: A Group of Happy Jailbirds
About this objectBlack and white photograph printed on a postcard, featuring five unidentified young women wearing long dark skirts and nigh-necked blouses with big bows at the neck. Two placards placed at the front of the group read 'DO WE LOOK DOWNHEARTED' and 'A GROUP OF HAPPY JAILBIRDS', while the young women in the middle is holding a placard - or possibly collection box - stating 'PLEASE ASSIST THE FACTORY GIRLS STRIKE'.
Note: The donor believes these women may be from Kirkcaldy but the occasion has not been identified. It's possible that the photograph relates to the cop-winding girls' strike at the Neilston factory of the English Thread Trust (1910) or to the women polishers' strike in the Singer Machine Factory at Kilbowie, Clydebank (1911) and/or to militant women's suffrage activities.
