Subject and Association Descriptionhttps://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fran_Winant:
Fran Winant (b.1943) is an American poet and painter. She mostly practiced in New York's Lower East End in the New York lesbian community. She is part of the Feminist Lesbian Art Collective (FLAC).
Originally from Brooklyn, she showed an early predisposition for writing and drawing. She writes poems from her childhood, and to address her feelings towards women, she invents a secret language to talk about what is not socially inexpressible. This language is a mixture of mathematical symbols and Greek letters.
She was heavily influenced by the Stonewall riots and became involved in the LGBT rights movement that emerged in the aftermath of the riots. In 1969 with other activists she founded the Gay Liberation Front, and joined the Lesbian Radicals and the Lesbian Food Conspiracy. The Lesbian Food Conspiracy is a collective aiming to produce good quality food at a lower cost to counter what is perceived as the monopoly of a patriarchal industrial food industry, destroying the environment and alienating animals. She joined the radical lesbians in 1970. She also founded that year with her companion Judy Grepperd the publishing house Violet Press. She then published various collections of poetry: Looking at Women: Poems (1971), Dyke Jacket (1976), and Goddess of Lesbian Dreams (1980). In 1980 the Violet Press also published a poetry anthology We Are All Lesbians (1980).
