Subject and Association Descriptionhttps://www.newcastlerollerderby.co.uk:
Founded in 2009 as Newcastle Roller Girls – Newcastle Roller Derby is an athletic and social non-profit organisation committed to improving ourselves and others through the sport of roller derby. We strive for athletic excellence and competitive success in the growing world of roller derby, embracing people of all shapes, sizes, ages, backgrounds and skill levels. In line with WFTDA, we are committed to inclusive and anti-discrimination practices in relation to all transgender women, intersex women, and gender-expansive participants. For more information, please see the WFTDA gender statement. We became a full WFTDA member in September 2014 and the hard work everyone puts into the league means we now have 3 full teams:
The Canny Belters – Our ‘A’ team and WFTDA roster
The Whippin’ Hinnies – Our ‘B’ team
The North Cs – Our ‘C’ team
Newcastle upon Tyne also has a men’s roller derby team, Tyne and Fear, and a junior league, for under-18s.
Our first bout was Hadrian’s Brawl on 11 April 2010, a real baptism of fire against the Auld Reekie Roller Girls‘ B team. 5th March 2011 saw our first ever home bout, Flog on the Tyne, against Aberdeen’s Granite City Roller Girls at The Lightfoot Centre in Walker, Newcastle. Final score: 113 – 63 We did a win! We are also guilty of introducing the phrase ‘do a win’ to the UK roller derby scene, our head coach Lone Danger coined the grammatically incorrect saying after our first win away against the Dolly Rockit Rollers in September 2010. Sorry, grammar fans!
