Subject and Association DescriptionKate Freland is referenced as an important post-Reformation figure in the history of midwifery on the opening page (page 3) of this booklet:
"She must have been a woman of strong character, because, herself unknown, she proposed to ally herself with the [two] midwives of Glasgow. How or where these two had been trained we do not know, but they were recognised. No wonder the Presbytery was aghast at Kate's suggestion. They summoned her before them on 5th April 1589, and duly admonished her for her "demerits" and temerity. We gather that Kate did not feel crushed, as she continued her good work among the needy women in Glasgow."
