About this objectFramed and glazed print: 'THAT SOUNDS GOLD' by Leslie Deere, signed and dated by the artist on the back, created as a test print for a series called Activators. Each print is a word sigil, intended to evoke the energy of the words printed. This print was chosen for Glasgow Women's Library as it also evokes the memory of the Pauline Oliveros inspired Sound Bath & Listening Workshops led by Leslie at GWL in the winter 2023/24 programme.

Walk so silently that the bottoms of your feet become ears – Pauline Oliveros
These sessions [Nov 2023 - Feb 2024] will each begin with an introduction to the research and work of composer Pauline Oliveros, who founded concepts such as ‘deep listening’, teaching us new ways to focus our attention on sound. Artist Leslie Deere will facilitate a chance to interact with Oliveros’ work through listening activities. This will be followed by a calming and immersive sound bath experience, where Leslie will play a variety of instruments inviting guests to decelerate and tune-in.

Pauline Oliveros (May 30, 1932 – November 24, 2016) was an American composer, accordionist and a central figure in the development of post-war experimental and electronic music. She was a founding member of the San Francisco Tape Music Center in the 1960s, and served as its director. She taught music at Mills College, the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Oliveros authored books, formulated new music theories, and investigated new ways to focus attention on music including her concepts of "deep listening" and "sonic awareness", drawing on metaphors from cybernetics.
