Subject and Association Descriptionhttp://www.malcolmlochhead.com/kgs.htm:
Keeping Glasgow in stitches was a major community arts projects organised by the community sewing project "Needleworks" and Glasgow Museums. The project was commissioned for 1990, when Glasgow was European City of Culture. The idea was to create twelve banners, one for each month of the year and the designs were to celebrate various aspects of the people, culture and life of Glasgow. Malcolm Lochhead was responsible for the creation of a concept design that carried through each banner and also included an "inner image" designed by other artists and craftspeople. Each banner measures eighteen by four and a half feet and was executed by over six hundred people of all ages and technical abilities. They involve every conceivable technique involving thread and fabric. Each banner was made month by month in the great hall of Glasgow Museum and Art Gallery. When placed together the banners spell out GLASGOW - 1990. The river Clyde flows through the banners and changes character with the different months and happenings associated with it.
