Name/TitleFrom Out of the Past: Memories of My Childhood and Youth
About this objectRing-bound, typed, unpublished manuscript titled 'From out of the past. Memories of my childhood and youth' by Margaret Gordon (born 1931) who grew up in Anderston during the Second World War and talks frankly about her experiences of being a young working class woman in Glasgow. The preface opens: "Two years ago when my sixtieth birthday was approaching, my family asked me if there was a particular piece of jewellery that I might like for this, what they thought was a "special" birthday. I think that I rather surprised them when on declining the offer of jewellery, I asked them instead to buy me a typewriter. Having had to give up my work as an Auxiliary Nurse some years previously for health reasons, I had been toying with the idea of trying to write an account of the early years of my life. If, when I was young I could have had the opportunity to go to college or University, I would have studied English and Literature. If I had been able to do so, my life might have taken a different direction."
