Subject and Association Description“Horses takes the library’s vast collection of zines as its starting point. These modest and seemingly ephemeral objects had a sense of immediacy; an urgency of production that could only happen in the bedroom of a young artist, writer, activist etc, with a do-it-yourself attitude to printing and self publishing. Their use of photocopying as a means of quick reproduction, prolific use of collage and appropriated imagery resonated closely with methods I often employ in my own work. Rather than working with one zine in particular, I used these characteristics to produce a series of prints in a newspaper format.
“Horses uses a group of images and motifs that have been circulating within my recent work; photographs are printed, photocopied, scanned, and then reprinted. Painted marks become printed marks and silkscreened shapes mirror previous pages. I’m interested in how these images can move across ‘states’ in a non linear fashion, like a Jacob’s Ladder toy, setting in motion a process of transferals from image to object and back.”
